Interested in joining the Robinson crew team?...

Crew is a great sport!  Learn more about Robinson Crew in the About Crew section on this website.  Like all other Robinson sports, crew requires a dedicated athlete willing to commit the time and effort necessary to compete at a demanding level.  To join the crew team you are expected to do the following:

1.  Attend school.  Students must attend school on a regular basis to succeed.  No student should use athletics as a reason to miss class.  A student must attend a minimum of three periods to participate in an athletic event scheduled for that particular day unless the absence is pre-arranged or there is written permission from a doctor to participate.  In addition, athletes must meet all of the Virginia High School League (VHSL) scholastic eligibility requirements.

2.  Fill out the required participation forms.  (click here to see required forms [team info::forms])

3.  Pay required fees and earn necessary pointsSince crew is a non-funded competitive varsity sport, funding must come from individuals and fundraising efforts.  In order to row on the water, you must pay the crew booster club fee ($60), the rower/coxswain's fee (two payments of $200 - one payment due in November (non-refundable) and the second payment due in January (refundable at the discretion of the Board of Directors), and you must earn the required points (novice=25 points//returning rowers=75 points) before you will be allowed to compete.  Points are earned by volunteering time at various fundraising events or by purchasing scrip.  The point system is a fair way of making sure everyone does their share of fundraising.  Members must also participate in two mandatory fundraising events:  TAG Day (February) and Spring Plant sales (May).  Additional fees include:  purchasing a team uniform (~$100) and fees for away regattas [outside the National Capital area] (~$250).

4.  Attend all practices.  This includes practices that are held over vacations or holidays.  When you join the crew team, your boat expects you to be there.  Absences put a tremendous burden on coaches who must then scramble to redistribute rowers.  We certainly understand that there may be occasions when you will have to miss practice.  An athlete MUST contact his/her coach before missing practice.  Missing practice or a regatta without good reason will be dealt with severely and may result in demotion, suspension, or being dropped from the team.  Once the season starts (end of February), practices are held each day after school and on Saturday mornings.  Regattas take place on Saturdays.
