Robinson's Crash Course in Survival

By Matt McFarland
Special to The Washington Post/Sunday, April 13, 2008; Page D09

After winning their heats at the Smokey Jacobs Regatta, the Robinson and Jefferson girls' varsity eight boats appeared set on a collision course to re-create the thrilling finish to last year's Virginia State Championships, which the Rams won by 1.6 seconds. But because of equipment failure and an actual collision, the rematch will have to wait.

"I really wish that hadn't happened," said Robinson Coach Rob Wasalaski, whose girls' varsity eight won the 1,500-meter race in 5 minutes 38.1 seconds. "I don't think we have an assessment of where everyone is because of T.J. having equipment problems."

"He's very determined. He's very fearless," Coach John Barrett said of All-Met
Kyle Browne. "There's nothing he thinks that he can't do."

Around the Area
: The Robinson girls' varsity eight looks to be   the strongest team in the area. The Rams return seven girls from last year's boat, which won the Virginia state championship. They are led by All-Met senior Bianca Arrington, who will row at Alabama, and senior Lauren Griffin, who will row at George Mason.  "Our team's on a mission to raise the bar to a level it's never been at Robinson," said Coach Rob Wasalaski. They're aiming to repeat at states, and be competitive at nationals. The team will skip the Stotesbury Cup Regatta to focus on SRAA Nationals, which are held in Oak Ridge, Tenn., May 23-24.

Danica Canfield was a Class of 2004 coxswain who suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died on January 14, 2002 during crew land training at Robinson. She had a undiagnosed cardiac condition, ARVD.  In her memory, an automated external defibrillator (AED) was placed at the Sandy Run boathouse with donations from friends and families of our crew team.
